Jammeh calls for regional plan for tourism development

Gambia’s president Yahya Jammeh recognised that tourism has the potential to be a central pillar in West Africa’s economic development and therefore calls for an all-inclusive plan to develop the sector in the region.

“There is no better time than now to develop a comprehensive and strategic blue print for regional tourism development,” he said on Monday. 

GTA Director removed and deployed to the foreign affairs

Sources closed to Gambia Tourism authority (GTA) has informed The Voice newspaper that the Director of GTA Binta Jobe has been remove with effect from Tuesday 14^th June 2011 and deployed to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

When this was corroborated to her, she said: “Yes it’s true”, noting that it is an executive directive. According to her, she will be taking up an overseas mission, but could not specify to which country and in what area.

“I am happy and it is an honor to be given this top job,” she said.

Binta Jobe joined the tourism industry in 2001 as a Personal Secretary to the GTA up to the time of her redeployment to the office of the foreign affairs ministry. She served as the managing director of the Gambia tourism authority.

Banjul, The Gambia (TNBES) The Africa Travel Association (ATA), having concluded its 35^th Annual
Congress in Banjul has noted that it is proud to partner with The Gambia on what it called a ‘hallmark event.

The association, founded in 1975 is the premier travel trade organization promoting travel and tourism to Africa and strengthening intra-Africa partnership. Its membership includes governments, tourism boards, travel professionals, airlines, hoteliers, businesses, travel trade media, academic institutions, and public
relation firms, consulting companies and non-profit organizations.

Banjul, The Gambia (TNBES) Delegates from across the Continent who attended the recently concluded 35^th Annual Congress of Africa Travel Association (ATA) has recognised The Gambia as a great potential for harnessing the untapped tourism market.

Some of the delegates who spoke to The Voice Newspaper in Banjul noted that they have drawn lessons from The Gambia and believe that the country can be a model in Africa’s tourism industry, with specific regards to the pace at which the industry is developing.
