Court urged to expunge count one in Golf club, Journalist trial

The defence counsels in the criminal trial involving four members of the Fajara Golf Club and Sports Producer and Presenter for West Coast Radio, Bakary B. Baldeh are urging the Kanifing Municipal Court to struck-out Count One “Conspiracy to Commit Felony”.

When the case resume on Wednesday before Magistrate Sheriff B. Tabally, the defence referred the Court to the application filed by senior counsel Pap Cheyasin Secka during the previous sitting.

Senegalese drivers to resume crossing into Gambia

Senegal’s transport unions have announced that they will resume crossing into neighboring Gambia from Monday May 9, 2011 after agreements were reached between Senegalese and Gambian officials on Friday.

The President of Gambia Press Union, GPU Ndey Tapha Sosseh has noted that the struggle for freer societies continues at sub-regional, regional and international levels.

In her statement relayed by Momodou Faal, the GPU Treasurer on World Press Freedom Day 2011 (May 3), she said “the cause for which we gather in Banjul is the same that we seek, pursue and push constantly in West Africa and in Africa.

“The struggle for freedom of expression, societies where people have the right to speech, the right to information, the right to have an opinion and to make choices openly, are the struggles that have kept me away on important days like today,” she said.

The event, funded by the United National Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Action Aid International-The Gambia, was held under a global theme “21^st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers”.

Badjie: All prosecution witnesses lied against me

Badjie is standing trial on multiple charges

The former inspector general of police Ensa Badjie has said all the witnesses brought by the prosecution to testify before the court lied against him.

Badjie said some of the witnesses are having grievances against him, while others were acting under promises by the Director of Public Prosecution M. Abdullah. Badjie, who is standing trial on charges of robbery amongst others, was being cross-examined by the DPP at the Criminal Division of the High Court, in Banjul presided by Justice Ikpala.

On Monday 9^th May 2011, Badjie said he has been visiting the City Pub, a bar in Serrekunda, since 1990/91, however, he argued that he went to the Pub only on official missions (during raids).

During this period, he said one “Seedy” was in charge of the Pub. He said he is not aware of the year one “Tone Yaya Khan” was in charge of the pub.

He is charged with six counts: two on rape, one on defilement, two on seduction and indecent acts by tourist Contrary to Section 121, 127 (1), 38, and 12 of the Criminal Code Caps 10 Volume 3 Laws of The Gambia, Children’s Act 2005 and the Tourism Offence Act 2003 respectively.

However, Andre Van Roy, a Dutch national, on Monday 9^th May, 2011 pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him by the State Prosecutor M. Abdullah. He is being represented by Counsel Kebba Sanyang.
