Ousainou Darboe of UDP
(The Daily News) Main opposition UDP leader, Ousainou Darboe had promised that, when elected into office in the country’s upcoming Nov. 24 presidential election, he’ll fix the country’s economy, which he said, is in a bad shape.
The UDP leader has also promised to exercise the rule of law, which he pointed, is a travesty in The Gambia under the Jammeh regime.
Darboe said, he will alleviate the rising rate of poverty. He promised to enhanced agriculture, the mainstay of the country’s economy. He described president Jammeh’s back-to-the-land clarion call as instead, ‘back-to-my-land’, referring to cheap labour being employed at president’s farms across the country where people from different walks of life volunteer.
The lawyer cum political figurehead made these promises in an interview with reporters at Election House after his nomination for the Nov.24 presidential elections was endorsed. Darboe is going into this year’s election in alliance with two other opposition parties – GMC and PPP.

He told the head of IEC that his party will play by the elections rules and refrain from violence, but warned against infringement on his party.
“If you could remember in 2006, I was held hostage for four hours in my house,” he told IEC chair, Carayol.
“I was in contact with you through telephone, but you could do nothing about it. That will not be allowed this time and I want you to take charge.”

Darboe frowned upon, what he called GRTS’ ‘negative propaganda’. He said, the state broadcaster covered his party’s mass political rally in Bakau recently, but the production was ‘poor’.
“That was a well attended rally, but the television footages showed empty seats. I want you to address that.”
