A Seydou Keita inspired Mali side kick-started their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a 1-0 win over Niger on Sunday.
The former FC Barcelona star ensured his side secured the first victory in this year's competition in Port Elizabeth after opening games on Saturday at Soccer City only produced stalemates.
An earlier fixture between Ghana and DR Congo in Group B ended 2-2 with Congo having to come from behind to salvage a point.
