Sidia Jatta threatens to sue government institutions


The opposition national assembly member for Wuli West on Tuesday February 24 issued a warning to government institution guilty of violating laws passed by an Act of Parliament due to Executive Directives that they will face the law.
Hon Jatta’s warning came at a time when the Gambia Public Printing Cooperation (GPPC) was due for scrutiny by the Public Accounts and Public Enterprise Committees (PAC/PEC) of the National Assembly in Banjul.

Two Senior Prison Officers charged, remanded

Babucarr Badjie and Bakary Jammeh, senior officers of the prison service were recently arraign at the Banjul Magistrate Court presided by Magistrate Alagbe Taiwo Ade and charged with three counts of abuse of office, bringing of prohibited articles into the prison and communicating with prisoners without permission.

Non-State Actors benefits from EU Funding


The Non-State Actors (NSA) Programme Management Unit (PMU) and the National Authorising Office Systems Unit have ended a one-week training for grant recipients to manage their projects in compliance with all necessary rules and regulations.
The training, which ended on February 25 at the Paradise Suites Hotel, is aimed at helping NSAs to achieve their set project goals in the interests of their target groups at community level.
The NSA Strengthening Programme is funded to the tune of €2, 469, 900 by the European Union (from the European Development Fund – EDF) and is being implemented in close collaboration with the Government of The Gambia.

Accused persons prefer to rely on prosecution’s evidence

Ex-CDS Langtombong Tamba and ex-Naval Chief Admiral Sarjo Fofana has told the Special Criminal Division of the High Court through their counsels that they prefer not to open their defence and instead would rely on evidence given by the prosecution.
On February 23, 2011, the accused persons, charged with treason and concealment of treason, were before presiding Judge, Emmanuel E. Ikpala. 

Defence calls for expunge of charges against Richards


The former High Court Judge is standing trial on sedition and false information

Defence counsels Surahata B. Janneh, Antouman Gaye and Pap Cheyassin Secka has urged a lower court to expunge charges brought against Moses Richards, who is standing trial on sedition and false information.

The defence told the Banjul Magistrate Court presided by Alagbe Taiwo Ade that the charges be struck-out. “They are bad in law and constitute an abuse of the process of the others.” The leading council Surahata Janneh said on 22nd February 2011.
