Auditor identifies UTG’s ‘insecure’ financial dealings

An auditor of the National Audit Office, Baba F. Drammeh, has identified ‘shocking’ financial irregularities at the University of The Gambia. 
 
Drammeh said the UTG officials have carried out payments whose vouchers are without adequate documentation, payments without recipients’ signature, procurement without competitive bidding and leave encashment that amounted to D4, 554, 083.28 (over US$ 119, 844).

In a breakdown, he noted that payment vouchers not signed by approving officer amount to D171, 955, payment vouchers lacking adequate documentation is D1, 458, 732, overseas travel allowance at D421, 078.78, payment without recipients signature D134, 180, procurement without competitive bidding D2, 272, 843.50 and leave encashment at D95, 294.

Constrain Hits Police in Exam Scandal Investigation

The Gambia Police Force is forced into a prolonged investigation into the national examination scandal that costs the taxpayers an extra four hundred thousands dalasi.
 
The West African examination Council (WAEC) on last Wednesday canceled a compulsory science paper after it discovered suspected examination malpractices at NioroJattaba Basic Cycle School in Kiang West.

Gambia Gov’t Reiterates Confidence in Accused Corrupt Vice Chancellor

The Gambia government has reaffirmed guaranteed trust and confidence in the Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia, Professor Muhammadou O. Kah, who was accused of being corrupt by spending moneys of the university lavishly on travel cost and per diem, and appointing mainly his relatives into the university.

In a joint press release published on Monday, the Gambia government through the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology in collaboration with the governing council of the University of the Gambia reaffirm their full confidence and trust in the vice chancellor and promised to continue to give him and his staff all the necessary support needed to strengthen and develop the university.
