VOL: 1 ISSN: 08: Members of the National Assembly on Friday 11th December, 2009 expressed their disappointment for the late arrival of Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture to present a document on the state of the country’s agricultural sector.
Mr. Bakary Trawally, who was supposed to make his presentation earlier during a two-day National Assembly workshop, organised by Pro-Poor Advocacy Group (Pro-PAG) and funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Paradise Suite Hotel in Kololi, arrived at the eleventh hour of the programme.

VOL: 1 ISSN: 07: The Senior Administrative Secretary of the United Democracy Party (UDP) has said that his party was denied their right to freedom of assembly by security personnel based on the ground that the party is not permitted to hold a political rally.
Mr. Emmanuel Nyang was speaking to The Voice Newspaper in an exclusive interview at his home in Latrikunda German on 14th December, 2009. He lamented that the party militants were denied their constitutional rights to freedom of assembly which is fully guaranteed by the constitution of The Gambia by not approving the request of permit written by the party leader.

VOL: 1 ISSN: 06: A press release from The Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices affecting the Health of Women and Children (GAMCOTRAP) has said that communities around Makka Misireh in Wuli East, Upper River Region, recently witnessed the inauguration of a milling machine meant to alleviate the drudgery of hard labour on rural women.
The Machine, which is funded by the German Embassy in Dakar, Senegal through its Banjul office in The Gambia, was welcomed by one hundred girls, who have been protected from female genital mutilation.
In her inaugural speech, the Representative of the German Embassy in The Gambia, Ms. Anita Martin said the support to the women of Makka Misireh is to bring attention to the efforts of GAMCOTRAP in creating awareness to end female genital mutilation (FGM).

The Magnitude of Money Laundering in The Gambia Difficult to Determine – Report

VOL:1 ISSN:4 “The laundering of illicit money is increasingly a major problem in The Gambia, but its magnitude or severity remains relatively difficult to determine,” the inter-governmental group against money laundering in West Africa has said, in its annual Report 2008.
The Report highlighted issues such as porous borders, weak controls, prevailing poverty, dominance of cash transactions, poor know your customer (KYC) compliance culture, massive inflows of tourists and anecdotal evidence of increasing drug-related and other criminal activities are all factors contributing to an increase in the money laundering risk in The Gambia.

Africa Eager to Bridge the Digital Divide

VOL:1 ISSN:3 The Vice President of The Republic of The Gambia has described the 11th Ordinary Meeting of RASCOM Assembly of Parties as crucial and timely for a continent eager to bridge the digital divide and become a strategic player in world affairs.
Dr. Isatou Njie Saidy was speaking on behalf of President Jammeh on 7th December, 2009 at the Kairaba Beach Hotel. She stressed that the Government of The Gambia is deeply gratified by the strides initiated by RASCOM to implement a satellite network for Africa.
“For us in The Gambia, the creation of such a superstructure is an assurance to boost our drive towards attaining the middle income country status in line with the objectives of our National Vision 2020,” she declared.
