‘Gambia Government Tarnished Own Image’

“I believe that this (Gambia) government’s image was tarnish by itself,” according to Ousainou Darboe, leader of the main opposition, the United Democratic Party (UDP), who was responding to the October 4 claims of “Relentless Smear Campaign against The Gambia”.

The way you treat your citizen tells a lot, Darboe told local journalists on Tuesday, a day before he was due for questioning by the country secret agency, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in relation to investigations into Amadou Sanneh (UDP National Treasurer)’s “asylum fraud allegations”.

Yahya Jammeh has noted both substantial progress and remaining challenges for Africa’s quest to meeting the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, 2015 when he spoke on Friday at the UN General Assembly in New York.  

In reference to the 2013 MDG report on Africa’s performance, the President of The Gambia said the remaining challenges include the difficulty of translating economic growth into decent job opportunities, improving service delivery and minimizing income, gender and spatial inequalities.

Hundreds of minority groups across Africa are in dire need of strengthened attention and protection, Rita Izsák, United Nations’ Independent Expert on Minority Issues warns on Thursday.

All African States and the international community must act urgently, she said at the 53^rd Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) hosted in Banjul, The Gambia from April 9-23, 2013. 
“The debate on who are the minorities and who are the indigenous peoples in Africa must not prevent stakeholders from addressing the extremely vulnerable situation of hundreds of minority communities across the continent,” Izsák said.
