Brikamaba: Women Turn to Gardens After Failed Rice Growing Season

Some three hundred and ten women in Brikamaba, Lower Fulladu West of the Central River Region (CRR) have turned to gardening to fight off food security threats after a failed rice-growing season.

More than five hundred women and their families, 282 kilometers from the Gambian capital, Banjul, saw their rice fields completely destroyed by floods following torrential rains between July and September in 2015, the villagers told TNBES on Friday.

‘We Kept The Fighting Spirit To The End’

Talibeh Hydara, the best student at the school, said Friday that 12 of 20 students, who started the course in 2012, had kept a fighting spirit to the end of a rigorous academic challenge. 

The Gambia Press Union (GPU) School of Journalism graduate its first batch of students who attained a higher diploma in journalism during a ceremony held at a local hotel in Kololi.

“We kept this spirit, not just because we wanted to, but because we had the best lecturers whose inputs were magnetic,” Mr. Hydara said on Jan. 16, 2015.

The Gambia eligible for additional Commonwealth-funded scholarship places

The Gambia, a least developed West African country which withdrew its membership of the Commonwealth in October 2013, is eligible for additional Commonwealth-funded scholarship places.   

The British Embassy in Banjul today April 9 announced the tripling of Chevening scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year. 

It said the decision was reached by the UK Budget on 19 March. The scholarships are the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s flagship global scholarship programme aimed at future leaders, influencers and decision-makers.

The UK Budget stated that additional funding will bring over 1,000 more potential future leaders to study in UK universities, meaning in the 2015-16 academic year, there will be more than 1,500 Chevening Scholars.  

All countries on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Development Assistance Committee (OECD-DAC) list of Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipients [The Gambia included] will be eligible for additional scholarship places. 

Journalists’ leader attributes ‘little reporting' on environment to low capacity

President of The Gambia Press Union, Bai Emil Touray, has said “capacity on environment issues is at low ebb since there are little reports on environmental issues on [local] radio stations and newspapers.”

The protection of the environment is a collective responsibility - especially for journalists, Mr Touray told a March 15 Biodiversity Action Journalists The Gambia (BAJ-Gambia)-organised training workshop for editors, web designers and radio producers at Wellingara Horticulture Model Centre.

He said it is important that journalists provide the people with accurate and timely information on environmental matters – and encourages BAJ and its partners to not only train journalists but also embark on research projects.

If someone had told me that a few years ago that using the social media will one day land me in a job, I would have totally disagreed with that person, be it an expert, a researcher or a fortuneteller. In fact, this wasn’t because I didn’t know what social media was all about but mainly because I was ONLY passionately on Facebook to chart with friends with some that I don’t know.

Here I am, [I] have signed a six month-contract with one of the best IT Service Providers in The Gambia to be its “Social Media Administrator”. A post I only knew existed during the signing of the contract.

Being born and brought up in the rural community of The Gambia where young people trek several kilometers to access internet to use the social media-Facebook and Skype, today, I count myself a one of the luckiest to have had the opportunity to access the social media anytime, anywhere thanks to an IPAD provided by Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN) International.
