The Gambia: Court fines Egyptians over illegal fishing

A lower court in the Gambian capital, Banjul, has
found two Egyptians guilty on a charge of ‘illegal fishing’ on Wednesday 23
April.
Ali Bahgatabd Alla Daoud and Hanishehata Abou El
Hassan were sentenced to a fine of D200, 000 by Magistrate Hillary Abeke, who
is presiding, at the Banjul Magistrate Court.
They had no lawyer and have told the court they can
only speak little English.

Gambia to tighten punishment for breakers of tourism laws

“Tourism Offences (Amendment) Bill 2014” which seeks to amend the “Tourism Offences Act 2003” by increasing the monetary penalties for persons convicted of offences related to tourism, was approved by the parliament on April 8.
The amendments have to be assented to by President Yahya Jammeh for it to become law. If he does, the new law would impose harsher fines to a minimum D50, 000. Terms for imprisonment will remain not more than two years.

Embattled State Agents Given Bail
Principal Magistrate Alagbe Taiwo Ade of the lower
court in Banjul on Monday, August 27 granted bail to two embattled officers of
Gambia’s National Drug Enforcement Agency (the NDEA).
Former Director of Intelligence and Investigations Mr.
Foday Barry and Crime Management Coordinator Mr. Pa Habib Mbye who are accused
of “theft, conspiracy and negligence of official duties” were granted a bail
bond of D300, 000 ($1000) each guaranteed by two Gambians.

independent national assembly member for Kombo Central Hon. Buba Ayi Sanneh has
lambasted the ruling APRC for failing to honor the promise it made to the
people of Kombo Central 17 years ago.
While
contributing to the adjournment debate in the 2nd legislative session
of 2012, Hon Sanneh said the present government promised to build the
Dimbaya-Marakisa road network, but it is 17 years now and noting has happen.

An anti-graft commission bill meant to punish crimes
of official corruption has been passed into law by Gambia’s parliament on June
28, 2012.
The 40page “The Gambia Anti-Corruption Bill, 2012” provides
for the setting up of
an Anti-Corruption Commission that will hold a mandate of investigating and
prosecuting crimes of corruption committed by Gambians within and outside the
country.

Briton murder trial moved to special criminal court
Camara urges court to struck out ‘suspected homo trial’
The
Special Criminal Division of the High Court in Banjul on May 16, 2012, convicted
and sentenced to prison four senior officials of the National Drugs Enforcement
Agency (NDEA).
Ibrahim
Bun Sanneh, former Executive Director NDEA, his deputy, Karamo Bojang, the
Finance Director, Ousman Sanneh, and Seedou Bojang, were handed various prison
terms by Justice Emmanuel Nkea. Marie Sanneh, was however, sentenced to
a fine.
They had earlier pleaded not guilty to 30 charges,
including conspiracy to commit felony; abuse of office; official corruption;
stealing; aiding and abetting; and economic crimes. The offences were alleged to have
been committed between January 2005 and April 2010.

(EGYPT) - The new Constitution of
Egypt is on the verge of being drafted. In order to support the
forthcoming work of the drafters, ARTICLE 19 has produced a
comprehensive policy brief outlining how the new Constitution should
protect the right to freedom of expression and freedom of information.
The
brief is based on international legal standards on freedom of
expression, including the decisions of international and regional human
rights courts as well as the authoritative interpretation of
international human rights law by the UN Human Rights Committee,
regional mechanisms and other bodies, such as the Special Rapporteur on
Freedom of Opinion and Expression.

(SIERRA LEONE) - The Trans-National Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) of the Sierra Leone Police, with support from the Government of Ireland, launched an operation code name ‘Desert Breeze’ at Mile 14 in the Tonko Limba Chiefdom in the Kambia District, where over one hundred acres of marijuana plantation were intercepted and 38 suspects arrested. Three trucks loaded with cannabis sativa were taken as exhibit.
