Germany's Mario Götze came in as a substitute and scored the only goal that win his country the FIFA World Cup a fourth time on Sunday July 13 at the Maracana stadium.
Argentina held on till the 113th minute second half of extra-time before Götze volleys in a substitute Andre Schürrlepass that he brought down on his chest.
It was a game of few chances with Argentina's Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Palacio all came close but were only successful in squandering their limited chances, while Germany hit the post and goal-provider Schurrle saw a near post effort saved.
The European side had defeated their opponents by the same 1-0 scoreline in 1990 when they won the World Cup in Rome, Italy.

They cruise into the 2014 final with a humiliating 7-1 thrashing of host Brazil at the Semi Finals on July 8, while Argentina see off the Netherlands a day after in a 4-2 post-match penalty shootout.
Host Brazil went on to lose 3-0 to the Netherlands on Saturday July 12 in the Third Place Playoff.
Despite Sunday's loss, Messi was named player of the tournament and was given the Golden Ball Award,
a price that Germany's Jerome Boateng could have also grabbed. German
goalkeeper Manuel Neur was named the best goalkeeper and received the Golden Glove Award.
And Colombia's James Rodriguez, whose side were ousted by Brazil in the Quarter Finals, walked away with the Golden Boot on 6 goals, an Award given to the leading goalscorer of the tournament.
