Host Brazil set-off with a win in the 2014 FIFA World Cup after opening the score in their own net with a Marcelo own goal.

It is not clear if he was in contention for scoring the first goal in this competition.

But the host went on to win 3-1 thanks to a Neymar effort from outside the box. His equalizer low drive shot hit the bottom far post going far beyond the reach of Croatian goalkeeper Pletikosa.

Neymar then converted a controversial penalty presided over by a Japanese central referee who earlier denied Croatia a clear penalty claim.
It was not too long when midfielder Oscar scored the fourth goal of the game to secure a winning start for the home side.
The other group A fixture is between Mexico and Cameroon on Saturday.

Anti-World Cup Protests
Hours before the game there were reports of anti-world cup protests in which the police clashed with the protesters outside the Corinthians Arena (stadium) in Sao Paulo.
Research published in Brazil’s Own Goal by the multinational human rights group, ARTICLE19, shows that the state’s response to demonstrations has been one of increasing repression and violence, more suited to Brazil’s years of military dictatorship.
Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians are protesting against government corruption, unaccountable decision-making and the vast expenditure used to host the games, money which they believe would be better spent on public services like health and education.
