Police put ‘bulldozer operative’ on trial

The police in Banjul, Gambia’s capital have brought criminal charges against Musa B. Sanneh, a member of the President Yahya Jammeh-established joint-security organisation, Operation Bulldozer.

OperationBulldozer, a brain-child of the Gambian leader, was setup in May 2012 for what Yahya Jammeh said was meant to “clean the country of criminals.” 

Sanneh, a soldier, was recently arraigned at the Kanifing Municipality Magistrates’ Court and charged with three counts of “abuse of office, corrupt practices, and destroying evidence.”  

He is also alleged to have sold heroin, a prohibited drug to one Vesna Faye Milosavljevic for the purpose of gaining money. 

Sanneh has since last week denied the charges and is being represented by Counsel Moses B. Johnson Richards.

On Monday, October 8, he made his second appearance before Magistrate Sheriff B. Tabally, presiding. However, the case could not proceed due to the defence counsel’s conspicuous absence.

Police prosecutor Chief Inspector Jammeh told the court that the prosecution has served the counsel (Mosses B. Johnson Richards) with the document on the resumption of the case, which he said the counsel confirmed.

Inspector Jammeh also informed the court of the presence of his witness, however, that could not stop Magistrate Tabally from adjourning the case on the basis of the absence of the defemce counsel.  

Tabally also warned that he court shall discharge the case if the defence counsel fail to appear in the next adjourned date of15 October, 2012.
