OBSERVER SPORTS EDITOR SELECTED TO COVER WORLD CUP


Banjul, The Gambia (TNBES) Observer Sports: Nanama Keita, Sports Editor of the Daily Observer, is among18 selected journalists from over 300 sports journalists in 35 African nations, that will cover 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa – courtesy of Twenty Ten project, a multi-disciplinary media project that aims to encourage media professionals to creatively produce and distribute articles, images, broadcasts and multimedia productions related to African football
Prior to his selection to attend the first-ever World Cup on African soil next summer, the Observer sports chief was among 108 journalists that were invited to attend training workshops around the continent in 2009.

After the 2009 trainings held in four different African cities each participant was tasked to submit three different assignments related to African football in order to allow an independent selection panel to
select the best 18 based on the qualities of the write-ups.

“I receive the news with a grate joy and pride,” elated Keita said shortly after receiving his confirmation note from the organizers in Netherlands.

“It’s the dream of every sports journalist to cover the FIFA World Cup, which is undoubtedly the biggest sporting even in the World. So it’s a dream come true to be the first Gambian sport journalist to cover the
first-ever FIFA World Cup in Africa.”

“I will thank the Twenty Ten project initiators for their great foresight for African journalists in offering to present our own view of African reality, as opposed to depending on foreign news organizations.”

“I will also thank the selection panel for the trust and confidence they have in me, hence selecting me as one of the best 18 journalist in Africa.”

“I am very much hopeful that I would live up to expectations when the bigger event kicks-off between June 11 and July 11 2010 in South Africa.”

Twenty Ten

Twenty Ten is an initiative of World Press Photo, Free Voice, Africa Media Online and Lokaalmondiaal, with support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery.

The project is inspired by the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the media opportunities this has to offer.

The project aims to give African journalists a voice, both on the African continent, as worldwide.

It is a multidisciplinary media project that focuses on strengthening African journalists from the various disciplines. VOL:2 ISSN:57
