The
government of Malta is to deport 80 Gambians who have been refused asylum,
according to newspaper reports from the small European country, Wednesday.
An
agreement between the European nation and The Gambia has been signed on the
sidelines of the 69th UN General Assembly to deport the migrants who
are being held in Malta.
"Currently
in Malta, there are around 80 persons from Gambia who were not awarded the
asylum status," the Malta Today quoted the government as saying.
Local
newspapers in Malta said the agreement was signed following a meeting between
Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Bala Garba Jahumpa and Malta’s Prime
Minister Joseph Muscat.
But it is not clear how many Gambian
migrants have been granted asylum in Malta.
Mr.
Muscat has said the human rights of the 80 Gambian
migrants were not being violated by deporting them to the tiny West African
country.
International human rights groups accuse The Gambia government, led by Yahya Jammeh, of human rights violations – especially press freedom and freedom of expression.
