Mr.
Said Djinnit, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West
Africa, meet with President Yahya Jammeh to discuss the overall situation in
West Africa, in particular, the growing threat of insecurity in the region.
The
United Nations said on June 4 that Djinnit’s visit to Gambia is part of his
regular consultations with regional leaders.
“The
discussions included the issue of transnational organized crime and drug
trafficking as a scourge that deeply undermines the efforts at sustaining
democratic institutions,” according to a UN statement Wednesday.
It
indicated that both Mr Djinnit and Mr Jammeh welcomed the “successful election
in Guinea Bissau” and called on the international community to fully support
the newly elected authorities.
Guinea
Bissau is facing the daunting challenges of socio-economic recovery and
institutions building which include the security sector reform, the UN said.
