The
opposition National Reconciliation Party (NRP) has announced on Tuesday that it
will hold its National Convention on May 8,
2014.
The party said it will also embark on
nationwide tour of The Gambia down to the villages after the convention to
consolidate its political gains on the ground.
Its leader Hamat NK Bah who is
expected to remain the flag bearer said he believes 2013 was a
disappointing year for the opposition in the country, not because they are
oppressed, but because “there is no unity”.
He said: “The year 2013 though peaceful
had failed to produce the desired results of all Gambians in the opposition as
expected - that is a united opposition speaking and acting in one voice and
taking up the challenge to restore democracy, human rights and rule of law in
our motherland.”
According to him, registered political
parties cannot operate on democratic principles without engaging in the
democratic processes (like elections) and by challenging the ruling APRC party.
“That’s why when our sister opposition parties
took a stand of a non-participation, the NRP calls it engagement to expose the
weaknesses of the APRC and the electoral commission to further intensify our
struggles for genuine electoral reform,” he added.
He said his party will work passionately
to achieve freedom, rule of law, democracy and good governance in The Gambia. He
said there is much work to be done: the state of economy calls for bold and
swift actions, creation of new jobs and a new foundation for growth.
We need to transform our schools,
college and university to meet the demands of the new age, he said at the NRP
Political Bureau on Kairaba Avenue on December 31.
