His death was announced Thursday night (Dec., 5, 2013) by sitting President Jacob Zuma who said "our nation has lost its greatest son." He also announced a State funeral for Mr Mandela and the lowering of flags in South Africa.
Nobel laureate Mandela is renowned for uniting mixed-race South Africa after years of brutality against the blacks by the country's white minority rulers.
He is also remembered as the founder of democratic South Africa, stepping down as president after only a one five-year term of office.
