Gamcel faces Armed Forces in Confed Cup

The 2013 Gambian league
champions Steve Biko have been handed what appears to be a tough task in the
preliminary stages of the 2014 CAF Champions League after they were drawn
against Algerian league winners Entente Sportive (ES) de Setif.
The games are a
two-legged affair to be played in Algeria and The Gambia in the weekend of
7-9 February, 2014 with the return leg in Banjul
coming a week later.
The winner of the tie will face either Senegalese
champions Diambar FC or Burkina Faso’s Association Sportive du Faso-Yennenga.
While Biko are participating in their first ever
season amongst the elites of African champions by virtue of winning their first
ever Gambian championship last season, the four-time Algerian champions have a
great pedigree in the CAF Champions League and are serial campaigners. ES Setif
has in the past won the African Cup of Club Champions and the Arab Champions
League twice.
Biko’s Vice President Sulayman Drammeh has called
for more sponsorship to avoid setbacks due to financial constraints.
Biko be hoping to reach
the group stages of the continental competition as no
other Gambian team has ever gone that far.
Meanwhile, African Champions Al Ahly and Tunisia's
Esperance are two of six clubs that have been given a bye in the preliminary
round. The other clubs are Confederation Cup winners CS Sfaxien, TP Mazembe of
DR Congo, Al Hilal of Sudan and Cameroon's Coton Sport. A total of 52 clubs
have entered for next year's competition.

Gambia’s FA Cup champions Gamcel have been drawn
against Sierra Leone’s Armed Forces in the CAF Confederations Cup preliminary
rounds.
The Armed Forces are entering a continental
championship for the first time and will host Gamcel in Freetown in the weekend
of 7-9 February, 2014. The return leg will be played in Banjul a week later.
The winner over two legs will face either Moroccan
side Difaa El Jadida or Burkina Faso’s Sportive SONABEL in the first round
proper.
Gamtel be hoping to reach
the group stages of the continental competition as no
other Gambian team has ever gone that far.
