Accuses Gambia Government of using his party as a "propaganda tool"

Opposition
leader Ousainou Darboe arrived in Banjul on Sunday at around 5pm local time
from the United States of America where he was on vacation – and was escorted
by party militants to his home without arrest.
A Gambia government statement on Friday that painted the main opposition United
Democratic Party (UDP) as a “Mandingo party” that is being used as a platform
for a UK and USA-led “smear campaign against the Yahya Jammeh government” - has
led to speculations that Mr Darboe risk arrest upon his return to Banjul.
However,
no incident took place. Darboe alighted from the plane at Banjul International
Airport and told journalists The Gambia government "must stop misleading Gambians"
on issues that are not commendable, according to media reports.
Darboe
rubbishes allegations by the government especially those remarks labeling the
UDP as a “Mandingo Party”.
“These
allegations are baseless and unfounded. If
the government cannot address the current economic hardship it should better
stop using the UDP as a propaganda tool,” he stressed.
The
UDP is comprised of all Gambian tribes, he said citing Momodou Lamin Shyngle
Nyassi, the party’s Propaganda Secretary - who is of the same tribe as
President Yahya Jammeh.
