Exiled Gambian journalist launch news site

Omar Bah was declared wanted by the Jammeh-Government in 2006
An exiled Gambian journalist living in Providence, Rhode Island, USA has launched a news website called American Street News (ASN) - www.americanstreetnews.com.

The ASN, according to Omar Bah, a former editor at the Daily Observer in Banjul, is aimed at reporting news and current affairs in Rhode Island communities and beyond.

“ASN reports on pressing issues affecting the common person in communities in which we live. Through this, we encourage what is known as ‘Citizen Reporting’ whereas readers can provide information and news items which would be published,” said Bah, who was declared wanted by the Jammeh-Government in 2006.

“In so doing, people can mail us pictures with short emails on issues they see in the streets that they think should be in the public domain,” he added. “We also welcome opinions and analysis on various topics that could promote a healthy debate environment.”

In the wake of the famous hacking-scandal of a Gambian US-based online newspaper, Freedom, in 2006, for which many people said to be “subscribers” were arrested and detained, Omar Bah was declared wanted.

Bah, who fled the country immediately, was an editor at the pro-government newspaper, the Daily Observer at the time.

  1. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something.
I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a little
bit, but other than that, this is fantastic blog.
An excellent read. I will definitely be back.
