Senegal’s transport unions have announced that they will resume crossing into neighboring Gambia from Monday May 9, 2011 after agreements were reached between Senegalese and Gambian officials on Friday.

Commercial drivers from Senegal can now cross into The Gambia at the border village of Keur Ayib in the southern Senegalese region of Casamance, the unions said.
They have been boycotting The Gambia for more than two months, demanding the end of harassments from Gambian security personnel at six checkpoints on the Gambian side of the border.
Gora Khouma, a leader of the Senegalese drivers, told WADR that the Gambian authorities have dismantled four of the six checkpoints on the road plied by the Senegalese drivers.
“We have set up a committee composed of 11 members from the Senegalese drivers unions and 11 from The Gambia and every three months, we will meet to assess the implementation of the agreement,” said Khouma.
