GAMCOTRAP receives EU Grant Award 2011

GAMCOTRAP has signed a €45,000 Project for 12 months with the European Union Non-State Actors project in The Gambia on February 17, 2011, the women human right institution has said.
At the signing of the contract, the Programme Coordinator Fergal Ryan informed GAMCOTRAP that it is one of the 13 organizations out of 70 that have qualified for the project and he looks forward to a successful implementation.

Receiving a copy of the contract, the Executive Director of GAMCOTRAP, Dr. Isatou Touray thanked the Europe Union for awarding her organization such a project, which went through a tough competition.
She assured him of GAMCOTRAP’s best cooperation in ensuring that the project succeeds. 

FAMEDEV Awards
Earlier on, Dr. Isatou Touray was one of the recipients of the Africa Gender Award 2011 by the Dakar-based FAMEDEV (Femme et media et Development) headed by a Gambian, Amie Joof-Cole.  Dr. Touray is amongst other prestigious awardees such as the Senegalese President, HE Abdoulaye Wade. Dr. Touray’s award was received on her behalf by Imam Baba Muhtarr Leigh.

306 Women training  
GAMCOTRAP in collaboration with Asturian NGO, ODAM ONGD recently concluded a series of community-based trainings for 306 communities and women leaders in the Lower River Region of The Gambia.
The six days sensitization workshops were held at Pakaliba, Suntukung, Jappineh, Kwinella, Jirrof and Tankular villages. The activities targeted the six district chiefs of the region, Alkalolu and women leaders including circumcisers and traditional birth attendants. 
The objective of the Training Information Campaigns was to sensitize the communities and women leaders on the impact of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Women and Children’s Rights, Gender-Based Violence and to clear misconceptions that FGM is not an obligation in religion. Other issues discussed were early and forced marriages and teenage pregnancy.
