Madam Jammeh Gives over D100, 000 to First Baby


The Baby of the Year Award Was Initiated In 2000

Banjul, The Gambia (TNBES) The First Lady of the Republic of The Gambia, Her Excellency Madam Zinab Yahya Jammeh on January 1, 2010 presented a donation of items and a cash prize of one hundred thousand dalasis (D100, 000) to the first babies of the New Year, at a ceremony held at the premises of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital, Banjul.
Madam Jammeh, the Chief Patroness of “Operation Save a Baby” also made a personal contribution by giving D20, 000 to each of the first born babies of 2010.
The initiative, which started ten years ago, has now become a tradition and as part of supporting and contribution to the wellbeing of children, their mothers as well as empowering the women of this country.
Speaking to journalist shortly after the presentation, the Chairman of Operation Save a Baby, Mr. Tombong Saidy said that since the inception of this organisation there have been a lot of achievements and support from the first lady and some laudable institution, who are ever ready to support this important initiative.
Mr. Saidy said that: “Operation Save a Baby is geared towards helping mothers in taking care of their children after birth and during their childhood development process and to promote the wellbeing of children and women.”
According to him, the beneficiaries who received the donated prices are the first of the year, the first baby girl of the year, the first baby boy of the year and the first twins of the year respectively.
He said that the D20, 000 donated by the First Lady will be put into good used, citing that each mother will be given D5000 and the balance D15, 000 will be saved at the Trust Bank for the benefit of the parent and the child.
He also informed journalist about their proposed fund rising programme to mark 10 years of Operation Save a Baby. “This year marks 10 years since the inception of this initiative, so we are planning to hold a fund rising event, in order to increase the level of support to children and their mothers,” he said.
According to him, they will invite all the previous beneficiaries to the fund raising programme to dilate on their achievements through what he called a laudable initiative by the first lady.
Institutions such as Trust Bank, Gamtel/Gamcel, Qcell and Gambia International Airline (GIA) all presented a cash prize of D15, 000 each with valuable babies’ items.
The Representatives of the various institutions indicated that their contributions are part of their social cooperate responsibilities.
They include Mr. Lamin Yaffa, the Commercial Manager of Qcell; Mr. Amadou Touray, the Public Relation Officer Gamtel/Gamcel; the representative of GIA; and Trust Bank Gambia Limited. VOL:2 ISSN:11
